The upcoming 2011 Geneva Salon will probably be the most important motor show in Lancia’s recent history, as the Italian brand is trying to start off its revitalization plan with a push of new models. However, the recently unveiled Flavia and Thema sedans and Grand Voyager MPV didn’t quite catch the public’s eye due to the fact that they’re all rebadged Chryslers, while the Delta hatchback hasn't even come close in repeating the first generation model's success.

This leaves the new Ypsilon to fend for the 105-year old company’s honor. The Italian firm's new small car is considered to be a “pocket flagship” and has been given a key role in Lancia's turnaround strategy, thoroughly emphasized during a press event that Carscoop was invited to attend at the Fiat Group’s Centro Stile design center in Turin, Italy.

Sales growth is critical to Lancia and in order to achieve this the automaker has repositioned the new Ypsilon, which for the first time in its 25 year-long history, is offered in a 5-door body style. According to Lancia Product Manager Claudio Nervi, this will help the new model to cover a much larger percentage of the B-segment than current 3-door only model.

Choosing the platform on which to build the Ypsilon was very important because Lancia wanted to accommodate up to five people, while keeping the overall length below 4 meters to avoid competition with larger B-segment cars. “Going to a Grande Punto platform also would have meant more competition”, said Nervi.

The Fiat 500’s platform came up as an obvious choice but it was stretched by 90 mm in length to improve passenger space. Nevertheless, Lancia considers that the main strength of the 3.84-meter-long model will be its stylish and not its practical side. “The Ypsilon emphasizes style. It’s not the rational customer’s choice”, said Lancia Communications Director Rino Drogo.

As for the Ypsilon's rivals, Nervi pointed out that “the main competitors are the Citroën C3, Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris”. He said that compared to the C3, the Ypsilon has “more innovative styling”, while he also claimed that it trumps the Fiesta thanks to “more personalization options and better quality”. Nervi added that Lancia’s new small car is also “more expressive than the Yaris and has more upscale optional equipment”.

Lancia aims to widen the customer base by targeting male customers as well. “The typical Ypsilon buyer is between 30 and 45 years old, technologically up to date, with a high social-cultural status and strong fashion sense”, Lancia officials said during the presentation.

The design will play a major part in attracting the aforementioned customers. The new Ypsilon has “evolved the styling language introduced by the Delta achieving better results due to the smaller size”, Claudio Nervi commented. Although it’s a 5-door model, Lancia wanted to keep the coupe character of the previous generation. To achieve this, the designers used hidden rear door handles and a sloping roof, along with a rising beltline. The choice of exterior colors will be the “wildest” in the segment, according to Color and Material Director Rosella Guasco, while the cabin will use high quality materials and various trim pieces that can be matched to the exterior finish.

To underline its “pocket flagship” status, Lancia said the new model will come with several exclusive features such as a large glass panoramic roof, the Magic Parking 2 semi-automatic parking system and a cap-less refueling system. These will be exclusive to the Ypsilon for at least one year.

Lancia expects to sell 122,000 examples of the Ypsilon annually from 2012, including the right-hand drive Chrysler version that will go on sale in the UK and Ireland in September. For this year, the Italians expect to shift up to 40,000 units with sales set to start in June, while the firm will also continue to offer the previous generation model as well.

The new Ferrari FF won't be the only model from Maranello to make its world premiere at the 2011 Geneva Salon, as Carscoop has learned that the Italian supercar maker will also introduce a greener version of the 458 Italia equipped with the company’s HELE (High Emotion, Low Emission) technology, which improves CO2 emissions and reduces fuel consumption.

Even though the average Ferrari 458 Italia customer probably won’t care about their supercar's CO2 output, the new system that incorporates stop/start technology helps reduce CO2 emissions by around 11 per cent, from 307 g/km to 275 g/km. It is expected that the HELE system will be offered as an option to 458 Italia buyers.

These are the first videos of Opel's new Zafira Tourer Concept, which will receive its grand premiere at next week's 2011 Geneva Salon. The first clip focuses on the relaxing "lounge atmosphere" found within the interior of the minivan, something that Opel highlighted more than anything else in the car's press release, while the second video showcases the new Flex7 seating concept. Hit the break to watch both clips for yourself.

We've seen more leaks on the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 than on a rusty pipe of late, so we're hardly surprised that a new set of images surfaced online today. The three fresh pictures show the Raging Bull's engine bay with the brand-new 700-horsepower 6.5-liter V12 unit, the supercar's interior and the sculptured fuel cap. Unless someone spills the beans later today or during the weekend, you'll have to wait until Monday for the full reveal at the Geneva Motor Show.

One of the surprises at this year's edition of the Geneva Motor Show is the resurrection of the De Tomaso brand, which will re-launch with a production ready concept model, set to go on sale in late 2011. The Italian company filed for bankruptcy in 2004, but was brought back to life after Rossignolo former Fiat executive, Gianmario Rossignolo, acquired the brand from a Modena bankruptcy court in November 2009.

The Italian brand's first vehicle was initially codenamed SLC for Sport Luxury Crossover, but in the latest press release, De Tomaso is calling it the SLS, which stands for Sport Luxury Sedan. We know what you're thinking in regards to Mercedes-Benz's Gullwing-door supercar, but De Tomaso was quick to state the vehicle will not be sold as the SLS, with the final production name to be revealed during the Geneve press conference on March 1.

The four-wheel-drive SLS is a BMW 5-Series GT-like high-riding saloon / crossover that will be offered at launch with a choice of two gasoline engines, a 300HP V6 and a 550HP V8, with a diesel said to be in the works.

De Tomaso said the Pininfarina-designed SLS is built on an aluminum chassis using "an innovative construction technology called Univis", details of which are to be released in Geneva.

The crossover model's architecture will form the base for two more models, including a sports sedan and a coupe, with De Tomaso planning to invest €116 million (US$160 million) in the project.

The Italian firm's new owner said the company plans to build 3,000 units of the SLS annually, along with another 3,000 limousines and 2,000 coupes.

The SLS will be produced at the De Tomaso Automobili S.p.A. plant, a former Pininfarina S.p.A. factory near Turin and in the Livorno factory by ex-Delphi workers.

If you're tired of looking at the same batch of pictures of the Geneva motor show-bound 2012 9-5 SportCombi, you'll be happy to know that Saab has published the first video of its flagship station wagon model, and furthermore, the car seen here is finished in a shiny black hue.

As a quick reminder, the SportCombi will be backed by the same all-turbo gasoline, bioethanol and diesel powertrain line-up as the 9-5 sedan, and will also offer the option of the firm's XWD all-wheel-drive system. First customer deliveries of the 9-5 SportCombi are expected in September.

In all honestly, I really struggle to see how the Bertone B99 fits into Jaguar’s past and current design lineage and line-up. The new generation of Jags – the XF and the XJ – are sleek, risqué and look like nothing else on the market. On the other hand, the B99 could just as easily be badged as a Lincoln, a Rolls-Royce or a Maserati. If you squint at the pictures you’ll see my point. It’s anonymously styled, as if Bertone used a book called, “Luxury Concept Cars 101” as a template. And that grille! It just screams, “Dodge Caliber!”

And apart from the taillights and the A-pillar, can you really see any of Jaguar’s past in the B99? I know I can’t. And isn’t the mere thought a compact Jaguar as bad as Aston Martin rebadging the Toyota iQ as the Cygnet or Porsche selling a SUV?

It devalues the brand, and in the luxury market that’s the worse crime a carmaker can make. Sure, it means more sales, but I’ve never been a fan of the, “profit uber alles!” the eighties left us with.

For me personally, Jaguars have always been either V8/V12-engined coupes and big sedans. The E-Type, the Mk II...even the much derided XJS and XJ6. As if it wasn’t bad enough that BMW’s sells a naturally aspirated (or naturally asthmatic) 4cyl 3-Series, now there’s this on the horizon all in the pursuit of the almighty dollar. To think we’ve gone from, “A Modern Day Successor to the E-Type” to yet another attempt for a “BMW 3-Series competitor” just breaks my heart.
